“But the Roman officer interjected, “Lord, who am I to have you come into my house? I understand your authority, for I too am a man who walks under authority and have authority over soldiers who serve under me. I can tell one to go and he’ll go, and another to come and he’ll come. The Roman officer understood

He was not worthy

Of Jesus’ time

Or presence in his home

He understood that Jesus

Was his superior

In every way that mattered

Jesus was his Lord

.

Yet as an officer

He also understood

That Jesus had authority

That no one else had

He knew that Jesus’ words

Were powerful commands

That sent demons away

And cured illnesses

.

As an officer he understood

Authorities’ ways

He knew that Jesus commands

Would have to be obeyed

He had somehow grasped

Jesus was from God

With heavens resources

At his command

.

Though he knew he was not worthy

Yet he also trusted

That Jesus would care

Would love even a Roman

He must have known

How Jesus handled sinners

Known that Jesus compassion

Was not bound by prejudices

.

His simple faith

In Jesus as Lord

Brought forth this beautiful statement

Of faith in Jesus word

All the officer required

Was Jesus command

And his son would be healed

Of that he was certain

.

There is something this man saw

That we all need to see

For Jesus love is His essence

And His love comes for free

And love empowers His actions

So that all can see

That healing and salvation

Are Jesus realms of authority

.

Lord like this Roman empower me

To have faith in Your love and authority

To trust Your commands will set me free

From the sickness that besets me

And trust the words we say together

Will bring healing to another

Your Presence in me my guarantee

Jesus in Your Presence

I come to You today

The heart of the father for a suffering child

Lays aside all pride in the search for a cure

He seeks out the one who by reputation

Has the answers he needs for his child salvation

.

In the words and actions of this Roman soldier

We can see a picture of God in action

For in Christ God left all heaven’s blessings

To come to earth to buy our salvation

.

This soldier who was an officer

Knew what it meant to be in charge

Knew how to address one who was above him

And he chose to call Jesus Lord

.

The words he chose showed he had real respect

That he took Jesus’ reputation seriously

He told Jesus plainly of his problem

Expecting that Jesus would have the solution

.

There was no doubt in this man’s approach

That Jesus would care for and cure his son

He had seen the heart of God in Jesus

And knew Jesus was one in whom he could trust

.

This man’s faith is a challenge to all who suffer

And all who care for a suffering one

To trust God our Father is loving and healing

To trust Jesus is our saving, healing Lord

.

That kind of faith is a gift from heaven

To simply know Jesus is our cure

And I will seek to live in it all my days

For it reveals Jesus in glory and praise

“When Jesus entered the village of Capernaum, a captain in the Roman army approached him, asking for a miracle.”

Jesus Your reputation for healing

Had spread from Your own community

So that even a captain in the occupying army

Knew that You were doing miracles

The captain could’ve commanded Your presence

Could’ve sent his soldiers to pick You up

But instead he came to where you were Jesus

Humbled himself to plead his case

He must have known that in the crowd he be unwelcome

As an enemy occupier he would be one scorned

But that did not prevent him from seeking You out

God’s law made it so

He could not enter the temple

Or even enter the town

For anything he touched

Would become unclean also

He broke the law to approach You
